Thomas Gainsborough was born in 1727 in Sudbury, England. He was the youngest son of a cloth merchant and showed an early interest in art. His father, however, wanted him to follow in his footsteps and become a merchant, so Gainsborough's formal education was limited.

Despite his father's wishes, Gainsborough pursued his passion for art and began painting portraits as a teenager. His early works were influenced by the Dutch and Flemish artists of the time, and he developed a style that was both realistic and expressive.

Gainsborough received some formal training in London, studying at the St. Martin's Lane Academy, but he was largely self-taught. He continued to develop his style, incorporating elements of the Rococo and Baroque movements into his work.

One of Gainsborough's most outstanding works is "The Blue Boy," a portrait of a young boy dressed in blue. The painting is notable for its use of color and light, as well as the subject's engaging expression.

Gainsborough's works can be found in many museums and galleries around the world, including the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
