Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli was born in Paris in 1700. His father— the court sculptor and architect Carlo Bartolomeo Rastrelli, taught his son craftsmanship from an early age. In 1716, after the death of King Louis XIV of France, the Rastrelli family moved to St. Petersburg. The head of the family joined the court of Peter I and cast cannons and sculptures for interiors in the city under construction on the Neva River.            

One of Francesco Rastrelli most famous creations in Russia is the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. It was built between 1754 and 1762 and served as the official residence of the Russian monarchs until 1917. Rastrelli designed the palace in the Baroque style, with its elaborate decorations and intricate details. The Winter Palace is now part of the State Hermitage Museum and is open to the public.


Another notable building designed by Rastrelli is the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, also known as the Pushkin Palace. It was constructed from 1747 to 1756 and was the summer residence of Empress Elizabeth. Rastrelli's design for the palace was grand and opulent, with its distinctive turquoise façade and lavish interiors. The Catherine Palace is a popular tourist attraction today.


Rastrelli also created the Smolny Convent in St. Petersburg. Construction of the convent began in 1748 and was completed in 1764. It was originally intended for the daughter of Empress Elizabeth, but it was later transformed into a convent. The Smolny Convent is known for its elegant blue and white color scheme and its stunning architectural details.
